Elle Je Studio & Gallery Open Day in Conjunction with Calumet Photographic

A Day at the Studio

On the 26th May 2012 many photographers and enthusiasts joined us for a fun day at the Studio.  We started the day with John McClean demonstrating how to use creative lighting in the studio.  With a Harley Davidson positioned to capture the roller shutter door as a backdrop,  John decided to use gels to create a more feminine feel to the image.  The beautiful features of our model Emily were further enhanced with the haze of the gel.  Using the infinitive cove to bounce light back to the subjects, the roller shutter door was lit with a spill supporting the chosen gel.  The bike was flooded with light from the octagon soft box a low level light sported by a smaller soft box which  bought out the features of the lower part of the bike, especially the wheel and finally a snoot was used to throw some light onto the model.  Sounds quite a complex set-up but with the luxury of 11 Bowens lights, a large studio and a specially built infinitive cove John could really go to town on creative lighting.

Jason Batterham delivered mini seminars on Light Room 4 all were very well received especially using Light Room 4 to change your image to black and white.  Great piece of software and so quick and easy to use especially for those commercial shoots when you don't want to loose money spending hours on photoshop.  These seminars were conducted in the IT room which is kitted out with Apple Macs.

To complement the Light Room seminars we had Joanne Mitchell using her skills to show her audience many tricks and tips using photoshop CS6 including adding textured backgrounds and blurring images. These seminars were carried out in the meeting room.

Finally Nick Craig of Mediabox Productions mesmerised his group with the advantages of using movement and still photography to create amazing DVDs, what a creative way of getting a message over to your clients or capturing  those truly memorable moments.

Finally Mandy, Rob and Ayisha worked really hard replenishing the refreshments throughout the day and helping to ensure all the guests were well looked after.

The open day was so successful that I will be holding another on an evening during the week to accommodate the photographers and enthusiasts that can not attend weekend due to their businesses.
